These are some bars that are recommended by Kyle and Colleen. The ones that say walk are under a mile away and are a nice walk. Rating is our personal rating of the place from one to four stars (as compared to places with similar prices). One means it's a hole-in-the-wall towny place that we still like for some reason (maybe the prices), two is decent, three means we really like it, and four is one of our favorite places to go. Cost is an indication of the price you can except to pay, it ranges from one to four dollar signs which correspond to cheap, medium, higher end, and very expensive.
Shakespeare Pub and Grille
3701 India St, San Diego 619-299-0230 (2.5 mile drive) Rating: * * * Cost: $ $ $
A fun British sports pub with good drinks and the usual British food. Both indoor and outdoor seating. There are a few TV's to watch games on, especially soccer. However, there is limited parking behind it. We recommend you visit when it is not too busy.
Rosie O'Grady's Irish Pub
3402 Adams Ave, Normal Heights 619-284-7666 (2.0 mile drive) Rating: * * Cost: $ $
A hole-in-the-wall Irish pub. It seems like a different experience every time we go there. We haven't had any of the food, but the drinks are decent and cheap.
Sandbar Sports Grill
718 Ventura Place, Mission Beach 858-488-1274 (7.9 mile drive) Rating: * * * Cost: $ $ $
A great little surf bar by the ocean. We both recommend the fish and/or shrimp tacos. The rolled chicken taco and chicken quesadilla appetizers are good also. While you're at Mission Beach make sure you walk around, ride the roller coaster, and put your foot in the Pacific Ocean.
Oggi's Pizza & Brewing Co
2245 Fenton Pkwy #101, Mission Valley 619-640-1072 (2.7 mile drive) Rating: * * * * Cost: $ $ $
Take a quick drive down into the valley and visit this sports bar on game night. This fun bar has 25 large TV's, great Italian food, and 8 better than average micro-brews to enjoy. We like the Lettuce Wraps, South Western Ravioli, Sausage and Peppers, and Hamburger Slammers appetizers as well as their pizza. As for beer, the California Gold is a good one to start with. Then Kyle recommends the McGarvey's Scottish or the Sunset Amber, while Colleen prefers the more hoppy Paradise Pale Ale.
Alibi
1403 University Ave, Hillcrest 619-295-0881 (0.8 mile walk) Rating: * Cost: $
A small dive bar that will remind you of your local towny bar back home. They have a decent tap selection and some pool tables. You are pretty much guaranteed to see some biker and veteran locals. The bartender is a very nice guy who pours a good drink. The best part is, if you drink too much, you can walk home.
Seau's the Restaurant
1640 Camino Del Rio N, Mission Valley (2.2 mile drive) Rating: * * Cost: $ $ $This sports bar was created by Charger Linebacker #55, Junior Seau. It is the largest sports bar we've ever been to. It has 60 TV's and one large projection screen that can be viewed from most tables. The menu is a combination of normal bar food (wings, burgers, sandwiches, etc.) along with some Japanese (Hawaiian?) items, including a Sushi section. There is also a brick pizza oven that in addition to making their pizza is also used for their bread appetizers. We had the Bruchetta, which came on pizza bread and was very good. This bar is a very fun atmosphere to watch a game at, I'm looking forward to our next visit.
